General Equipment Operator II

About the role

The General Equipment Operator II operates a variety of motorized equipment to keep airport runways, taxiways, ramps, parking lots and roadways safe and serviceable. The role supports airfield, roadway and grounds maintenance at Washington Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Key responsibilities

• Operate front‑end loaders, forklifts, sweepers, snow‑removal equipment, tractors, mini backhoes and other general construction equipment.
• Perform inspections, assist with pavement patching, roadway and parking‑lot repairs, and vegetation management.
• Set up and manage traffic control (MOT) for lane closures and work zones, including use of speed attenuators and variable message boards.
• Conduct snow‑removal operations using snow brooms, de‑rubberizing equipment and magnetic sweepers.
• Provide on‑the‑job training and guidance to supplemental workers and lower‑level employees.

Required profile

• Four years of progressively responsible experience operating general equipment, including at least two years with motorized construction equipment.
• Knowledge of Management of Traffic (MOT) principles and work‑zone safety practices.
• Ability to work safely in moderate to heavy physical conditions and adhere to airport safety regulations.
• High school diploma or GED; Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within 90 days of hire.

Required skills

• Operation of front‑end loaders, forklifts, sweepers, snow‑removal equipment, tractors, mini backhoes, jackhammers and chain‑saws.
• Use of hydraulic, manual and electronic control systems for equipment calibration and attachment changes.
• Computer proficiency with work‑order, time‑and‑attendance and data‑analysis systems.
