Foundation Relations & Grants Manager

About the role

PEN America, a nonprofit at the crossroads of literature and human rights, is seeking a detail‑oriented and creative Foundation Relations & Grants Manager to join its close‑knit Development team. The role will manage a fast‑moving portfolio of foundation grants, support stewardship, and help grow funding for programs that champion literature and democracy.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the full grant lifecycle: prospect research, outreach, proposal writing, award administration, and reporting.
• Conduct funder research to align PEN America’s priorities with foundation interests and generate new funding ideas.
• Collaborate with Finance and program teams to develop budgets and ensure timely financial reporting.
• Track grant payments, execute payment requests, and maintain accurate records in Raiser’s Edge.
• Support the Director of Foundation Relations & Grants with data integrity, calendar management, and development of grant‑management tools.
• Provide ad‑hoc assistance to the broader Development department as needed.

Required profile

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent written communication and research abilities.
• Experience working with internal and external partners in a nonprofit setting.
• Commitment to reporting to the office at least three days per week.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge donor management software.
