EU/UK Legal Counsel – Commercial & IP Law

About the role

Steve Madden is looking for an experienced, business‑oriented attorney licensed in one or more European Union jurisdictions to join its Legal Department in New York. The role will serve as the primary legal advisor for the company’s European commercial activities and intellectual property matters, supporting a portfolio that includes footwear, handbags, accessories, apparel, and licensed brands.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and manage a wide range of domestic and international commercial agreements, such as distribution, agency, licensing, manufacturing, e‑commerce and marketing contracts.
• Provide practical legal guidance to Sales, Licensing, Product Development, Design, Sourcing, Marketing and Brand Management teams on European market transactions.
• Conduct IP clearance reviews for product and branding concepts, focusing on European trademark and design rights.
• Advise on IP risk mitigation, work with external counsel, and help develop global IP protection strategies.
• Oversee trademark, design, copyright and unfair competition disputes across Europe, coordinating outside counsel and shaping litigation strategy.
• Support regulatory matters affecting consumer products, including commercial law, marketing practices and consumer protection.

Required profile

• Licensed attorney in at least one EU jurisdiction, with the ability to practice in multiple EU countries.
• Significant experience handling commercial contracts and intellectual property matters for international consumer‑goods companies.
• Strong understanding of European trademark, design and copyright law.
• Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with business units and external law firms.

Required skills

• Expertise in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements (distribution, licensing, manufacturing, e‑commerce, marketing).
• Deep knowledge of European IP clearance, enforcement and litigation processes.
• Ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical business advice.
