Engineering Technician V – Quality Assurance Technician

About the role

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory seeks a detail‑oriented Engineering Technician V to perform incoming and outgoing inspection of large optical components used in critical laser operations. Work is performed in a Class 100 cleanroom and dark‑room environment, supporting the Light Matter and Fusion directorate.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect finished and uncoated optics for surface flaws (scratches, digs, stains, haze, inclusions, cracks, edge chips) and contamination.
• Document defects on inspection maps, create Non‑Conformance Reports (NCRs) when requirements are not met, and verify serial numbers and part orientation.
• Review drawings, specifications, and prior NCRs before inspection; use comparator cards, scratch/dig standards, microscopes, and loupes to assess defect size.
• Maintain cleanroom protocols, proper gowning, and accurate inspection records in accordance with quality and safety procedures.

Required profile

• A.S. or equivalent experience in optical or mechanical technologies.
• Ability to work deliberately, safely, and meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks.
• Experience with production technologies, databases, and data manipulation.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Q‑Level DOE security clearance.
