Mechanical Design Engineer for Advanced Laser Facility

About the role

North Wind Services is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) on the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science projects. The role involves developing innovative hardware designs for laser, optics, mechanical and diagnostic applications in a fast‑paced, high‑tech environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed designs and 3D CAD models of hardware using PTC Creo Parametric.
• Create assembly and fabrication drawings, perform interference and tolerance stack‑up analyses, and conduct basic stress/strain assessments.
• Define specifications, processes, and procedures for installation, commissioning, and integration of hardware.
• Collaborate with vendors, multidisciplinary engineering teams, and LLNL technical personnel.

Required profile

• AS degree or equivalent with solid experience in mechanical engineering, including concept to production of complex projects.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects from start to finish and produce tolerance stack‑up analyses.
• U.S. citizenship, ability to pass pre‑employment physical, drug screen, background investigation, and obtain Q‑level DOE clearance.

Required skills

• Proficiency with PTC Creo Parametric (and preferably Creo Simulate).
• Experience with PTC Windchill PDM for engineering change requests.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and creation of fabrication/assembly drawings.
• Ability to perform interference, tolerance stack‑up, and basic stress/strain analyses.
• Competence with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
