Engineering Technician V – Optical Mechanical Technician

About the role

North Wind Services is seeking an Engineering Technician V to support optics production for the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The role involves handling, processing, and testing large, high‑value laser optics in a cleanroom environment.

Key responsibilities

• Handle large optics (up to 18" square, 50 lb) using mechanical lifts or two‑person techniques.
• Process optics through hand cleaning, automated cleaning, coating, and etching.
• Inspect and mount optics into mechanical frames.
• Perform metrology including interferometry, ellipsometry, spectroscopy, imaging, and operate defect‑metrology tools.
• Work in a class 100 cleanroom and use web‑based data management systems to track work and record results.
• Follow safety, security, and ESH&Q procedures; ship and receive optics and related materials.

Required profile

• A.S. degree or equivalent experience in optical or mechanical technologies.
• U.S. citizenship, ability to obtain Q‑level DOE clearance, and pass background, drug test, and medical exams.
• Willingness to work overtime, shift work, weekends, and 24/7 operational schedules.
• Physical ability to lift 50 lb, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.

Required skills
