Engineering Manager - Indirect Channel (Direct Connect API & Web)

About the role

Avis Budget Group is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager / Lead Architect to provide technical leadership for the architecture, engineering, modernization and operation of large-scale enterprise applications and API platforms. The role suits a technology leader with 15-17+ years of experience architecting and managing complex, highly distributed systems, with deep expertise in API-centric architectures, microservices, cloud platforms, GDS (Global Distribution Systems) and legacy modernization. The successful candidate will lead the evolution of the company's technology ecosystem toward a modern, API-first, cloud-native architecture while integrating seamlessly with existing mainframe, GDS, reservation, fleet, rental and enterprise systems.

Key responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership for large-scale, mission-critical enterprise applications and define architecture strategies aligned with business objectives and modernization goals
• Architect highly available, scalable, resilient and secure distributed systems and establish standards for microservices, APIs, event-driven systems and cloud platforms
• Own and evolve the enterprise API strategy, using Apigee, 3scale and RedSwift, and set standards for API design, governance, security, observability and SLAs/SLOs
• Lead GDS architecture and integration with reservation, rental, fleet and partner ecosystems, including modernization of legacy integrations
• Lead AWS cloud architecture, including CDN, edge delivery, load balancing and hybrid-cloud integration with mainframe and data center environments
• Lead the transformation of monolithic applications into microservices using domain-driven design, Kafka and event-driven patterns, and set Java/Spring Boot standards
• Lead mainframe and legacy modernization, using API façade and strangler patterns
• Lead and manage multiple engineering teams, mentor senior engineers and architects, and work with Product, Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Data, DevOps and business stakeholders

Required profile

• 15-17+ years of experience architecting and managing complex, highly distributed enterprise systems
• Deep expertise in API-centric architectures, microservices, cloud platforms, GDS and legacy modernization
• Ability to influence architectural decisions across multiple engineering organizations and lead teams behind business-critical platforms
