Lead Engineer - Java & OCI

About the role

Avis Budget Group is looking for a hands-on Lead Engineer to design, build and operate mission-critical enterprise applications on a modern Java stack deployed to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The role leads a team of engineers through the full software delivery lifecycle, sets technical direction and raises engineering quality, working with product, architecture, security and infrastructure teams to modernize legacy systems and drive cloud-native adoption.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of scalable, secure, high-availability services using Java and microservices patterns.
• Own end-to-end solution architecture on OCI, including compute (OKE, VM instances), storage and Autonomous Database / Oracle DB.
• Lead a team of 4-8 engineers, review code and designs, mentor and develop careers.
• Define engineering standards: coding guidelines, branching strategy, test coverage, observability and CI/CD practices.
• Drive cloud migration and modernization, refactoring monolithic apps into containerized services on Oracle Kubernetes Engine (OKE).
• Maintain integrations with enterprise systems and implement security practices such as OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, OCI Vault, IAM policies, network segmentation and data classification.
• Ensure production reliability through monitoring, alerting and incident response with OCI Observability or equivalent.
• Work with product owners to turn requirements into technical roadmaps, estimates and delivery plans.
• Evaluate emerging technologies (including AI/agentic capabilities on OCI) and recommend build vs buy and vendors.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 5+ years in Java backend development (Java 11+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, RESTful APIs).
• 2+ years of hands-on OCI experience (compute, OKE, networking, IAM, Autonomous Database, Object Storage, OCI DevOps or equivalent CI/CD).
• Proven experience leading engineering teams or acting as tech lead on complex, multi-team initiatives.
• Strong grounding in microservices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and API design.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain technical trade-offs to senior leadership.

Required skills

• Relational databases (Oracle DB preferred); PL/SQL a plus.
• CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, OCI DevOps), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and Git workflows.
• Application security fundamentals.
• Preferred: OCI certifications, Oracle Fusion ERP/EPM integration, Kafka or OCI Streaming, data platforms on OCI, regulated or multi-region environments.
