Embedded Software Engineer (Avionics)

About the role

Impulse Space is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer in Redondo Beach. The engineer writes code that runs on custom avionics hardware to execute flight and ground test functions, working with avionics hardware, GNC and propulsion engineers. The role covers system architecture, rapid prototyping, flight projects and controlling flight hardware during ground tests.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and improve low-level processor functions such as peripheral control and communication interface setup
• Implement closed-loop control of physical processes and failure detection and response algorithms (e.g. broken sensors, radiation upsets)
• Provide technical input on new system developments from an embedded software perspective
• Write code to support development testing of avionics and propulsion devices
• Write rigorous, reviewed and tested code supporting manufacturing and flight

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math or a scientific discipline, or 2+ years of professional software-building experience instead
• 1+ years writing C/C++ code for an embedded system or vehicle (robot, car, drone or spacecraft)

Required skills

• Preferred: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardware and source-level debuggers
• Preferred: 2+ years with communication protocols such as I2C, CAN, SPI, UART
• Preferred: 2+ years with microprocessors and microcontrollers (caches, buses, memory controllers, DMA)
• Preferred: low-level drivers for camera modules (MIPI CSI-2, USB, SPI, I2C) and sensor communication protocols
• Preferred: motor drivers, power electronics, encoders and current sensors

• Pay of $130,000 - $280,000 per year, depending on role, level, location and skills
