Director of Nyumburu Cultural Center

About the role

The University of Maryland’s Nyumburu Cultural Center seeks a visionary leader to direct its mission of promoting African‑American, Caribbean, and African heritage. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Belonging, the Director will shape strategy, oversee operations, and ensure programming aligns with student retention and graduation goals.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall strategic leadership, vision, and day‑to‑day management of the Center.
• Supervise staff, manage facilities, and coordinate internal committees.
• Develop and deliver signature cultural programming that supports academic success.
• Oversee fiscal stewardship of state funds, grants, foundation accounts, and scholarships.
• Serve as the public spokesperson, cultivating relationships with alumni, donors, and K‑12 partners.
• Lead fundraising, marketing communications, and university‑wide collaborative initiatives.
• Build and maintain partnerships with internal campus units and external community organizations.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in higher‑education or cultural‑center administration.
• Strong background in budget management and grant administration.
• Demonstrated ability to engage diverse student populations and promote retention.
• Excellent communication and public‑relations skills.
• Capacity to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
