Cultural Resources Technician – Field Archaeology

About the role

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Technician for a temporary, field‑based assignment in the Southeast United States. The position runs through February 2027, offering at least 40 hours per week of hands‑on archaeological work supporting a diverse client base.

Key responsibilities

• Perform complete archaeological surveying and field testing across project sites.
• Conduct shovel test pits, excavation units, and data recovery activities.
• Record field data, complete forms, capture digital photography, and produce in‑field maps.
• Assist with archaeological office and laboratory tasks.
• Participate in GPS data collection under the supervision of a Field Lead or Project Archaeologist.
• Follow the safety program, identify hazards, and communicate mitigation measures.

Required profile

• Accredited Field School Certification.
• Ability to travel, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and high altitudes.
• Physical capacity to carry equipment up to 40 lb.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on backcountry roads.
• Willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
• Preferred: 6+ months experience with archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring methodologies.

Required skills

• Use of Collector and Survey123 for data collection.
• GPS data collection and field mapping.
• Operation of 4WD vehicles in remote areas.
