Collections Specialist

About the role

The Collections Specialist supports Specialty Healthcare Billing & Consulting by managing unpaid and denied medical claims. Working from a home office, the role requires strong communication, detailed documentation, and the ability to meet daily and monthly productivity targets.

Key responsibilities

• Initiate follow‑ups on all unpaid or denied claims with the appropriate payer.
• Research, appeal, and resolve claim rejections, underpayments, and denials.
• Respond to written payer communications promptly.
• Process claims and appeals by gathering necessary information.
• Request insurance changes in the billing system as needed.
• Communicate payment or denial patterns that impact revenue to management.
• Document daily follow‑up activities in the billing system consistently.
• Maintain positive relationships with team members and payer representatives while preserving patient confidentiality.

Required profile

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• At least one year of medical collections experience in a medical office, central business office, or hospital business office.
• High school diploma or GED with two years of high‑pace collections experience.
• Strong math skills and ability to type at least 60 wpm.
• Willingness to work overtime as needed.

Required skills

• Knowledge of insurance carrier billing and reimbursement.
• Familiarity with medical terminology, ICD‑9/ICD‑10, CPT/HCPCS codes.
• Proficiency with 10‑key entry and typing speed of 60 wpm.
• Experience with patient accounting systems and EOB interpretation.
