Bilingual Peer Service Advocate – Sixth Street Self‑Help Center

About the role

The Peer Service Advocate provides crisis intervention, peer counseling, and outreach to support community members at the Sixth Street Self‑Help Center. The role focuses on compassionate engagement, harm‑reduction principles, and connecting individuals to essential resources.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct crisis intervention and brief assessments to identify high‑risk individuals.
• Staff the drop‑in area, reaching out to people who have difficulty engaging with traditional services.
• Provide peer counseling and encourage participation in programs and services.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of San Francisco resources and accompany clients to appointments as needed.
• Document interactions, manage time effectively, and uphold confidentiality.

Required profile

• Minimum two years of peer counseling experience or a BA/BS degree with related experience.
• Personal lived experience with poverty, homelessness, mental illness, or substance use.
• Ability to build rapport, de‑escalate tense situations, and work compassionately with diverse populations.
• Strong interpersonal communication, active listening, and teamwork skills.
