Backend Engineer - AI

Anything is an AI product engineer that turns English into apps, covering mobile, web, design, AI, backend, infrastructure and payments. It is hiring a Backend Engineer - AI in San Francisco for a full-time position. The role suits people who want to grow faster than elsewhere, work on real AI systems from day one and take ownership of meaningful product work, supported by senior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Break down complex or unclear problems into clear steps and propose practical solutions
• Make thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, correctness and long-term maintainability
• Build AI-powered features using TypeScript and modern AI frameworks
• Collaborate closely with product and design to align on goals and ship with confidence
• Talk with users and use the product yourself to understand real-world needs
• Learn new concepts quickly, stay up to date on AI research and engineering, and take on tasks that stretch your abilities
• Deliver independently, with fast skill growth and shipped product impact

Required profile

• A strong technical foundation from a top CS program or equivalent hands-on experience building real systems
• Evidence of ambitious, self-driven projects or internships requiring problem solving and ownership
• Solid programming fundamentals and comfort with TypeScript
• Ability to read deeply, reason clearly and communicate complex ideas
• Curiosity about AI systems and a track record of learning quickly
• Experience in fast-paced environments while balancing care with urgency
• Nice to have: prior internships in AI, backend or infrastructure; being among the first 10 hires at a startup; personal projects showing initiative; diverse interests such as writing, design, philosophy or economics
