Attorney 3 or Attorney 4 – Public Defender

About the role

The Georgia Public Defender Council is seeking an Assistant Public Defender at the Attorney 3 or Attorney 4 level for its Specialized Division. The position primarily serves indigent clients in the western judicial circuits of Georgia and will be performed mainly from home with access to office resources.

Key responsibilities

• Provide competent and zealous legal representation for indigent clients, handling cases ranging from routine to high‑profile felonies.
• Conduct case research, investigation, and preparation for hearings and trials, including complex criminal matters.
• Manage assigned staff, plan workload, and make informed decisions to achieve organizational goals.

Required profile

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution and a current Georgia State Bar membership, or eligibility to sit for the Georgia Bar within one year of hiring.
• Three years of criminal defense experience or equivalent experience at lower‑level attorney positions (Attorney 2 or Attorney 3).
• Demonstrated knowledge of statutes, case law, and local criminal procedures.
