Assistant Professor – Chemistry and Chemical Biology

About the role

Northeastern University’s College of Science seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Chemistry and Chemical Biology (or Biology) to start in the 2027‑2028 or 2028‑2029 academic year. The position focuses on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of physical AI, robotics, and autonomous systems for chemistry and biology.

Key responsibilities

• Develop an independent, externally funded research program on automated/self‑driving laboratories for chemistry and biology.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and mentor students and post‑doctoral researchers.
• Participate in departmental, university, and professional service activities.
• Collaborate across the College of Science, College of Engineering, and Khoury College of Computer Sciences.

Required profile

• PhD in chemistry, biology, engineering, or a related field by the start date.
• Strong scholarly record with potential to build a vigorous research program.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching and inclusive, experiential education.
• Ability to work with a diverse, global student population.

Required skills

• Experience with AI, robotics, or machine‑learning methods applied to scientific experimentation.
• Knowledge of digital twins, multi‑agent control systems, or automated laboratory instrumentation.
• Proficiency in designing and executing self‑driving lab workflows.
