Robotics Engineer, Software

About the role

KION Group is seeking a Mobile Robotics Software Engineer (ROS2 / NextGen) to develop critical software components for advanced mobile robotic systems supporting the Americas region. This hybrid role is based in Holland, MI and works within the Robotic Systems Development team of the Central Technology Organization.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and develop core C++ software for embedded onboard systems, simulation, and deployment.
• Design and implement robust tools and frameworks for internal teams and robotic platforms.
• Drive technical direction in code structure, system design, and performance optimization.
• Collaborate with robotics, cloud, and systems teams on multi‑functional projects.
• Mentor and review work of junior and mid‑level engineers.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years of professional C++ software engineering experience in robotics.
• Hands‑on experience with ROS/ROS2 or similar robotics frameworks.
• Background in autonomous systems, embedded environments, and real‑time or distributed systems.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics or related field.
• Ability to travel up to 30% internationally.

Required skills

• Modern C++ (C++17/20), STL, memory management, performance tuning.
• Linux development, debugging and profiling tools.
• Scripting in Python and Bash.
• Middleware such as DDS, ZeroMQ, gRPC.
• Containerization and orchestration tools.
