About the role

Anthropic is looking for a Research Scientist to join its Life Sciences team in San Francisco. The role sits at the intersection of machine learning, software engineering, and biology, aiming to make Claude a super‑human research assistant for life‑science tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and ship agentic tools that enable Claude to run bioinformatics pipelines, query databases, and generate analysis notebooks.
• Design and implement evaluation benchmarks for tasks such as figure interpretation, protocol reasoning, and literature synthesis.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to prototype and launch features for life‑science users.
• Engage with external biotech, pharma, and academic partners to gather workflow feedback and drive product improvements.
• Build and maintain the engineering infrastructure, including data pipelines and evaluation harnesses, supporting the biology product surface.
• Translate biological domain knowledge into product requirements and evaluation criteria to guide model improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience applying machine learning and software engineering to biological problems (computational biology, bioinformatics, protein modeling, genomics, etc.).
• Background in drug discovery or academic research with an understanding of real scientific workflows.
• Strong software engineering abilities, capable of writing production‑quality Python and managing large codebases.
• Hands‑on experience training or fine‑tuning large language models for scientific tasks.
