Job description
About the role
Amentum is seeking a highly adaptable, self-directed Signal Processing Scientist to join its research and development team. The role bridges advanced academic research and real-world operations, turning complex mathematical models in universal spectral estimation and array processing into efficient, testable code applied to CUI and classified datasets. The schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM EST.
Key responsibilities
- Use numerical acoustic propagation models to predict transmission loss and ambient sound in realistic Arctic environments
- Incorporate environmental datasets (satellite observations, oceanographic forecasts, field observations) into numerical simulations
- Validate physical models against empirical acoustic recordings from under-ice environments
- Support experimental preparation and on-ice field work, including lab testing of equipment, experiment planning and field logistics
- Write technical reports, document experimental methods and present findings to internal teams and external stakeholders
- Occasional field travel to collect Arctic data (not expected to exceed 3-4 weeks per year)
Required profile
- Degree in Oceanography, Physics, Acoustics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a closely related discipline
- Applied experience in experimental data analysis, wave propagation simulations and acoustics
- Experience combining computational modeling with hands-on mechanical troubleshooting or field-expedition work is encouraged
- Security clearance: candidates without a Secret clearance may be considered and upgraded once interim clearance is received; paperwork must be in the DOW database and the SF86 verified before starting
Required skills
- Scientific programming in Fortran, C++, Python or Matlab for modeling and data analysis
- Numerical simulations and wave propagation mathematics
- Signal processing applied to experimental physics or oceanography
- Analysis of noisy datasets such as under-ice acoustic recordings
- Technical writing and equipment troubleshooting and calibration
What we offer
- Salary range of $110,000 - $120,000
- Health, dental and vision insurance, paid time off and holidays
- Retirement benefits including 401(k) matching, educational reimbursement and parental leave
- Employee stock purchase plan, tax-saving options, disability and life insurance, pet insurance
