Member of Technical Staff – Atmospheric Science Research

About the role

Join causal’s mission to build a Large Physics foundation Model that can predict and influence physical systems, starting with weather. As a Member of Technical Staff you will embed deep atmospheric expertise into every stage of model development, from data selection to validation.

Key responsibilities

• Guide the sourcing and validation of atmospheric data, advising on observation systems, their characteristics, and pathologies.
• Define forecast quality metrics and implement rigorous verification methodologies.
• Run case studies on high‑impact weather events to probe model behavior and uncover failure modes.
• Benchmark model performance against operational numerical weather prediction baselines and the state of the field.
• Partner with model, evaluation, and product teams to translate atmospheric expertise into research direction and credible results.

Required profile

• Relentless problem‑solving attitude with rapid execution and quick learning in unfamiliar domains.
• Deep expertise in atmospheric science, meteorology, or a closely related field (PhD or equivalent research experience).
• Familiarity with operational forecasting, numerical weather prediction, and forecast verification methods.
• Comfort working with large observational and reanalysis datasets.
• Ability to collaborate closely with ML researchers and translate domain knowledge into technical requirements.
• Evidence‑driven approach to evaluating model quality.
