Communications Specialist – Earned Media

About the role
The Council on Foreign Relations is looking for a Communications Specialist to help amplify the work of its Studies department. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, you will craft and execute earned‑media strategies that raise the visibility of CFR fellows, publications, and events.
Key responsibilities
- Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, and targeted pitches.
- Develop resource guides and collateral for journalists, editors, producers, and bookers.
- Maintain press distribution lists, track media mentions, and update expert pages.
- Support staffing of DC‑based events, book photography, and virtual media briefings on breaking news.
- Monitor the communications inbox, respond to media inquiries, and assist with onboarding new team members.
- Recruit, interview, select, and supervise DC‑based communications interns.
- Collaborate with the Studies department, Meetings, Publications, and Events teams to coordinate media outreach.
Required profile
- Strong written and editorial skills with experience in press‑release writing.
- Ability to work closely with scholars, fellows, and cross‑functional teams.
- Excellent organizational skills for managing multiple media lists, events, and briefing schedules.
- Flexibility to be onsite in Washington, DC at least three days per week (hybrid work model).
