Professional Counselor I/II – University Counseling Center

About the role

The Professional Counselor I/II provides a full continuum of psychological services to the Texas A&M University‑Corpus Christi community. Working under general supervision, the counselor focuses on crisis intervention, triage assessment, and alcohol and other drug screening and programming.

Key responsibilities

• Provide brief individual counseling, consultation, and referrals.
• Conduct alcohol and drug screenings and comprehensive substance‑use assessments.
• Facilitate recovery‑focused group sessions, psychoeducational classes, and support groups as assigned.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical records system.
• Participate in bi‑weekly case conferences and informal case consultations for client care coordination.
• Conduct triage and crisis assessments, including de‑escalation, safety/risk evaluation, and stabilization planning during daily walk‑in hours.
• Coordinate referrals to higher levels of care (inpatient, intensive outpatient, etc.) as needed.
• Follow up with students in crisis to monitor progress and ensure linkage to support.
• Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and outreach programs on mental health, suicide prevention, and AOD issues.
• Engage in campus‑wide prevention and early‑intervention efforts and serve as a liaison and consultant to campus partners.
