Veterinary Director & Attending Veterinarian

About the role

The Director of the Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR) serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the University of Miami’s animal research program, which is AAALAC accredited across three campuses. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship, this senior leader shapes the strategic direction of animal care, research support, and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide senior leadership for all animal facilities, personnel, and related operations.
• Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with university research goals.
• Manage physical assets, space, and equipment to ensure efficient utilization.
• Lead funding proposals for infrastructure improvements and major equipment purchases.
• Oversee implementation and use of animal management software/systems.
• Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
• Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including AWAR, PHS Policy, and AAALAC standards.
• Maintain strong relationships with principal investigators and research teams, providing high‑quality service and transparent feedback.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in veterinary research administration and animal facility management.
• Deep knowledge of regulatory agencies, animal welfare standards, and accreditation processes.
• Proven ability to lead large, multidisciplinary teams and drive strategic initiatives.
• Excellent communication skills for interaction with investigators, university leadership, and external stakeholders.
