Research Assistant – Entomology & Pest Management

About the role
The Research Assistant will perform independent and supervisory research activities in entomology, pest management, horticulture, statistics, and experimental design. This grant‑funded position is for a 12‑month term at the Citrus Center in Weslaco, Texas, with continuation dependent on funding.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in designing, planning, and executing laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments.
- Collect, record, and maintain data sets from trials and samples.
- Perform statistical and technical analysis of experimental results and prepare progress reports.
- Contribute to outreach articles, scientific manuscripts, and oral or poster presentations.
- Assemble, operate, maintain, and repair research equipment; manage purchasing and financial records for project supplies.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences, biology, entomology, horticulture, pest management, plant science, or related field.
- Three years of relevant experience in lab and field research, preferably with citrus pests or diseases.
- Ability to work safely in greenhouses, outdoors, and handle equipment.
- Texas driver’s license and, if applicable, pesticide applicator license.
Required skills
- PCR, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid extraction, and other molecular biology techniques.
- Statistical analysis and data‑analysis software.
- Microscope operation and maintenance.
- Setup and maintenance of drip or sprinkler irrigation systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and database creation.
