Political Affairs Officer – UN DPPA/DPO

About the role

The Political Affairs Officer supports senior UN officials in high‑level political engagement and preventive diplomacy across multiple regions. Based in New York, the incumbent works within the front office of the Assistant Secretary‑General, providing analysis, advice, and coordination on political issues.

Key responsibilities

• Provide advice and recommendations to senior officials on key political issues and ensure quality standards for briefings.
• Communicate senior‑level decisions to relevant desks in DPPA‑DPO and monitor implementation.
• Gather, select, and analyse information from diverse sources, including the press.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of political events affecting assigned countries and thematic mandates.
• Monitor actions of intergovernmental groups, UN bodies, governments, and NGOs.
• Draft and review project proposals, budgets, and reports for extra‑budgetary funds.
• Prepare meetings for senior UN officials with country representatives.
• Develop and track workplans, compile implementation reports, and perform related duties as required.
