About the role
The Political Affairs Officer (Conflict-related Sexual Violence) supports the Department of Peace Operations in analysing and responding to political developments that affect the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on sexual violence in conflict. Based in New York, the officer works within the conflict‑related sexual violence team to provide policy guidance, training support and strategic advice to field missions and UN partners.
Key responsibilities
- Gather, select and analyse information on conflict‑related sexual violence from a variety of sources, including press and UN communications.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of political events and their impact on the implementation of Security Council Resolutions 1820, 1888, 1960, 2106 and 2242.
- Monitor national and regional political developments related to conflict‑related sexual violence and advise field missions on potential implications.
- Provide technical and substantive support for the development and roll‑out of training, guidance and workshops on the DPO mandate.
- Prepare background papers, analytical notes, lessons‑learned documents, report sections and inputs for publications.
- Maintain contacts with UN partners, international organisations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
- Track actions taken by intergovernmental groups, NGOs and other stakeholders concerning conflict‑related sexual violence.
- Participate in evaluations and technical support missions related to the mandate.
Required profile
- Strong knowledge of UN Security Council Resolutions 1820, 1888, 1960, 2106 and 2242.
- Familiarity with DPO’s mission‑specific mandates addressing conflict‑related sexual violence.
- Ability to analyse political developments and assess their impact on UN operations.
- Experience in preparing analytical documents, background papers and training materials.
- Proven ability to liaise with UN agencies, international organisations and government bodies.
