Political Affairs Officer (2 positions)

About the role

The Political Affairs Officer will be based in the Americas Division of the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations. Reporting to the Senior Political Affairs Officer and the Deputy Director, the role supports policy formulation, strategy development and decision‑making on peace and security issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, research and analyse political developments in the region, using digital tools and data analytics to identify trends and emerging risks.
• Prepare analytical reports, briefing notes, concept notes and other communications for senior UN officials and external partners.
• Lead the design and implementation of early‑warning, conflict‑prevention, mediation and peace‑building initiatives.
• Integrate gender, youth, environmental and climate‑security perspectives into policy recommendations and programme planning.
• Coordinate strategic communications, including speeches, press releases and social‑media content.
• Supervise budgeting, project implementation, reporting and recruitment processes for regional programmes.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in political science, international relations, law, public administration or a related field.
• Extensive experience in political analysis and conflict prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean, including work with legislative bodies and Member States.
• Proven ability to incorporate gender and inclusion considerations into analysis and programme design.
• Field experience with the United Nations or other international organisations on peace and security matters.
• Fluent in English and Spanish (UN Level III); working knowledge of French is an asset.
