Manager of Safety and Research Compliance

About the role

The Manager of Safety and Research Compliance serves as the primary resource for research safety and regulatory compliance within the College of Engineering. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research, this role provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure safe, secure, and compliant research environments.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and administer programs that promote a culture of safety, security, and regulatory excellence across laboratories, machine shops, makerspaces, and testing facilities.
• Collaborate with faculty, EH&S, Office of Research, Sponsored Programs, and Campus Public Safety to interpret and apply federal, state, and university regulations.
• Conduct inspections, provide training, and support emergency response and incident management activities.
• Enable federally funded research by mitigating risk and ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, etc.).
• At least three years of progressively responsible experience supporting research safety, laboratory operations, export controls, research compliance, or research security in a research‑intensive environment.
• Preferred: Master’s degree and five years of experience, plus professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CECP, CPP, PSP, or PMP.

Required skills

• Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, EAR, CMMC, ITAR, and OFAC regulations.
• Experience with compliance management systems and data analysis.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
