Inter-Regional Adviser on Localization of the SDGs

About the role

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is seeking an Inter‑Regional Adviser to support the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reporting to the Chief of the Programme Management and Capacity Development Unit and under the guidance of the DPIDG Director, the incumbent will provide high‑level policy advice to governments and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Provide policy advice online and through short‑term field missions to national and local governments on multi‑level governance and subsidiarity for SDG implementation.
• Support integration of the local dimension of the SDGs into national development strategies, planning processes and public policies.
• Strengthen capacity of local and regional authorities to design, implement and monitor SDG‑related policies and programmes.
• Advise on institutional arrangements and governance mechanisms that enhance vertical and horizontal policy coherence.
• Promote innovative approaches to local public service delivery, including digital services and participatory governance.

Required profile

• Experience providing policy advice to governments or international organisations.
• Knowledge of multi‑level governance frameworks and SDG localisation.
• Experience in capacity development, knowledge‑sharing and peer‑learning initiatives.
• Ability to work under the supervision of senior programme managers and within a UN inter‑regional network.
