Financial Controller – Fashion Apparel

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to lead accounting, inventory, costing and financial operations for a fast‑growing fashion apparel company serving major retailers such as Kohl’s and Walmart. The role combines strategic financial planning with hands‑on oversight of day‑to‑day accounting processes across multiple warehouses and retail channels.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily accounting functions including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll and month‑end close.
• Manage inventory accounting, reconciliations and valuation across several warehouses, 3PLs and retail outlets.
• Maintain accurate product costing – landed costs, freight, duties, chargebacks, markdowns and vendor expenses.
• Develop and monitor inventory controls to reduce shrink and ensure compliance.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reporting packages.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting, cash‑flow analysis and long‑term financial planning.
• Collaborate with Operations, Production, Logistics and Sales to improve profitability.
• Track retailer deductions, chargebacks and compliance penalties for major accounts.
• Coordinate audits, tax filings and external accounting relationships.
• Ensure adherence to GAAP, internal controls and company financial policies.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff while building scalable processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field (CPA preferred).
• 7+ years of accounting and finance experience with strong exposure to inventory and costing.
• Background in fashion apparel, wholesale, consumer products or retail preferred.
• Proven experience working with major retailers such as Walmart, Kohl’s or Target.
• Knowledge of overseas manufacturing, freight, duties and supply‑chain costing.
• Strong analytical, organizational and problem‑solving abilities.
• Hands‑on leadership style capable of operating both strategically and tactically.
