Economic Affairs Internship – UN DESA, New York

About the role

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) is seeking a motivated Economic Affairs Intern to support the Financing for Sustainable Development Office in New York. This unpaid, full‑time internship offers a hands‑on experience in international tax cooperation and sustainable development policy.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in drafting, reviewing, and preparing papers, presentations, studies, and reports related to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.
• Attend, support, and summarize virtual and in‑person conferences and meetings.
• Conduct research and analysis on tax matters, including multilateral and bilateral tax treaties, digital services taxation, dispute resolution, information exchange, and ESG‑related tax issues.
• Prepare briefing notes, talking points, and speeches for senior UN officials.
• Monitor and draft summaries of relevant intergovernmental meetings of the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council.
• Undertake ad‑hoc assignments as required by the office.

Required profile

• Current university student or recent graduate eligible for UN internships.
• Strong interest in international tax policy, sustainable development, and multilateral negotiations.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Ability to work 35 hours per week under supervision.
