Deputy Sheriff – Law Enforcement

About the role

The York‑Poquoson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a full‑time Deputy Sheriff to perform uniform patrol and law‑enforcement duties. You will protect lives, property and public rights while responding to calls, patrolling the county and supporting investigations.

Key responsibilities

• Patrol assigned areas by vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot, responding to complaint calls and deterring crime.
• Investigate and secure crime scenes, collect evidence, and maintain chain of custody.
• Serve legal papers such as warrants and subpoenas, explain their purpose and make arrests when required.
• Interview witnesses, interrogate suspects, conduct legal searches and surveillance, and prepare investigation reports.
• Provide community policing, crisis intervention, and assistance in domestic‑abuse, juvenile and civil matters.
• Monitor vehicle speeds with radar, conduct criminal and driving checks, and operate alcohol‑detection equipment.
• Prepare case files, offense reports, accident reports, tow sheets, property vouchers and lab requests.
• Testify in court and collaborate with the Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office.
• Train new officers in field procedures.

Required profile

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and hazardous conditions.
• Physical capability to walk, run, climb, crawl, lift, and balance on uneven terrain.
• Strong communication skills for interviewing, reporting and courtroom testimony.
• Willingness to respond to emergencies, traffic incidents and public events.
