Data Scientist, Marketplace Incentives

About the role

This role exists to hillclimb the dataset objective: the ideal dataset, the objective function, the taxonomy, and the value of incremental data. You take that objective and maximize it through incentives, marketplace design, and collection behavior so that each hour of data collection moves the score forward.

Key responsibilities

• Treat the dataset and quality objective/value function as the primary optimization target, not raw hours or vanity volume.
• Design marketplace mechanics (task mix, targeting, bonuses, payouts, eligibility) to encourage high‑value data collection.
• Run experiments—treatment assignment, holdouts, pay and bonus tests—retain those that improve the objective and discard the rest.
• Measure incremental collection impact on the dataset under the value function and report findings in actionable language.
• Collaborate with software engineers to ship incentive and payout changes directly into the collection product.
• Monitor for Goodhart’s law effects where collectors optimize proxies instead of the true objective, and close those loopholes.

Required profile

• Quantitative mindset capable of optimizing an existing objective function.
• Comfortable designing and interpreting experiments (assignment, holdouts, power, leakage).
• Experienced with messy field/collection data.
• Enjoys rapid iteration: small changes measured against the objective, then shipped again.

Required skills

• Experience with marketplaces, incentives, pricing, or growth experimentation (gig, two‑sided, or similar).
• Experience building payout, bonus, or real‑money pay systems.
• Track record of shipping experiment results into a product rather than only a notebook.
