About the role
The New York State Unified Court System is hiring a Court Attorney – Hearing Officer (Referee) to serve in the Kings County Surrogate’s Court. The role involves conducting hearings, researching complex legal issues, and drafting judicial opinions within the Law Department of Surrogate Bernard Graham.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct hearings, either to report findings or to determine outcomes.
- Take testimony, evaluate facts, and report findings to the presiding judge.
- Research and analyze complex civil and criminal legal questions.
- Prepare confidential memoranda and draft judicial opinions.
Required profile
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- Three years of service as an Associate Court Attorney, or eight years of relevant legal experience after bar admission.
- Knowledge of Trusts and Estates Law is preferred but not required.
Required skills
What we offer
- Base salary of $130,061 plus $4,920 location pay.
- Eligibility for up to 20 % remote work under a pilot program.
