Workers Compensation Litigation Associate (Remote, NY Required)

About the role

This position is with a well‑established minority‑owned insurance defense firm that serves major carriers and their insureds. The role is remote‑first but requires the associate to be within commuting distance of New York courts for in‑person appearances. You will work closely with experienced partners while gaining autonomy appropriate to your experience level.

Key responsibilities

• Manage workers' compensation defense files from inception through resolution.
• Attend virtual and in‑person hearings, depositions, mediations, and conferences.
• Draft and respond to discovery, motions, and other pleadings.
• Conduct and defend depositions of parties and witnesses.
• Prepare clients and insureds for depositions and court proceedings.
• Appear in court for conferences, hearings, oral arguments, and other proceedings.
• Participate in mediations, arbitrations, and settlement negotiations.
• Assist with or lead trial preparation, including second‑chair or first‑chair opportunities.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Active admission to the New York State Bar.
• 3 to 7 years of workers' compensation defense experience preferred.
• Litigation experience in personal injury, general liability, or insurance defense matters.
• Prior experience representing insurance carriers or working within an insurance defense firm.

Required skills

• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities.
• Ability to manage a caseload with increasing independence.
• Experience with court appearances, depositions, and motion practice.
• Familiarity with billing practices and adherence to client guidelines.
