Wastewater Technician

About the role

ABB's Jonesboro, Arkansas site is hiring an onsite Wastewater Technician who works in industrial wastewater treatment, handling manufacturing, chemical or food processing byproducts rather than household sewage. The role focuses on removing heavy metals, toxic chemicals, oils and complex organic compounds so that strict local, state and federal discharge permits are met. It reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Key responsibilities

• Pretreatment operations: manage oil-water separators, clarification systems and chemical precipitation units.
• Chemical management: dose neutralizing agents, coagulants and polymers to cope with highly variable influent chemistry.
• Sludge handling: operate filter presses, centrifuges and drying beds to dewater and prepare hazardous or solid waste for disposal.
• Source monitoring: inspect production lines and coordinate with plant operators to manage sudden chemical or volume spikes.
• Regulatory compliance: document discharge metrics to avoid regulatory violations and plant shutdowns.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• State-issued Industrial Wastewater Operator license (often separate from municipal certifications).
• Understanding of chemical hazards, safety data sheets (SDS) and OSHA regulations.
• Safety conscious, 5S driven, and able to recommend safety corrections immediately.
• Self-motivated.
• Work authorization to work for ABB in the U.S.; no sponsorship offered.
