Veterinary Assistant – Food Animal (Level 1‑3)

About the role

The Large Animal Hospital at LSU Veterinary Medicine seeks dedicated Veterinary Assistants (Level 1‑3) to support the Food Animal department. You will work alongside faculty clinicians, house officers, and veterinary students, providing hands‑on technical support for routine, emergency, and critical‑care cases.

Key responsibilities

• Assist faculty, house officers, and students with appointments, emergency cases, medical procedures, and inpatient treatments.
• Handle, restrain, load, unload, admit, transfer, and discharge large‑animal patients safely.
• Prepare, clean, disinfect, and restock examination and treatment areas before and after procedures.
• Monitor patients, perform hourly assessments, and administer treatments as prescribed.
• Support the Isolation Unit, Large Animal Intensive Care Unit, resident teaching herd, and equine services.
• Maintain strict infection‑prevention and biosecurity protocols throughout the hospital.

Required profile

• Extensive experience with safe handling and restraint of livestock.
• Ability to instruct veterinary students on proper animal‑handling techniques.
• Commitment to a safe learning environment for personnel, students, and patients.
• Flexibility to assist across the hospital as needed, including after‑hours coverage.
