Vehicle Operator – Public Transit Driver

About the role

The City of South Padre Island Transit Department is seeking a reliable Vehicle Operator to transport passengers safely and on schedule. This full‑time position involves driving a heavy‑capacity vehicle, maintaining its condition, and providing courteous service to the public.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a heavy passenger vehicle (up to 35 persons) on city‑approved routes and schedules.
• Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and report any issues.
• Greet and assist passengers, answer inquiries, and direct them to appropriate resources.
• Keep vehicles clean daily, both interior and exterior, and maintain the storage area.
• Prepare daily paperwork documenting passenger counts and any discrepancies.
• Provide information to the public about services and local businesses.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum two years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A or B with passenger endorsement.
• Defensive Driving Course completed within the last 12 months.
• USDOT qualified physical within the past 24 months.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Bilingual Spanish and English preferred.
• No more than two moving violations or accidents in the past three years.
• Pass pre‑employment drug test and comply with ongoing random testing.
