Part‑Time Vehicle Operator – Public Transit

About the role

The City of South Padre Island is seeking a reliable Part‑Time Vehicle Operator to transport passengers safely and efficiently on city‑approved routes. You will operate heavy‑duty vehicles, conduct inspections, and provide courteous service to the public.

Key responsibilities

• Drive heavy machinery (up to 35 passengers) following scheduled routes and timetables.
• Perform pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and report any deficiencies.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness and keep the storage/office area tidy.
• Assist passengers, answer inquiries, and direct them to services or businesses.
• Complete daily paperwork on passenger counts and any discrepancies.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least two years of related transportation experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL A or B) with passenger endorsement.
• Recent Defensive Driving Course certificate (within 12 months).
• Valid USDOT physical (within 24 months) and state driver’s license.
• Preferably bilingual in Spanish and English.
• No more than two moving violations or accidents in the past three years.
• Pass pre‑employment drug test and ongoing random testing.
