Training Specialist – Juvenile Justice (NY HELPS)

About the role

We are seeking a Training Specialist to deliver and develop core training programs for the Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY). The role involves instructing staff on basic juvenile justice concepts, crisis prevention, first aid, and physical restraint techniques, supporting a statewide network of residential youth facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver DJJOY Juvenile Justice Basic Training modules and related topics.
• Instruct Crisis Prevention Management (CPM) and First Aid/CPR/AED courses.
• Conduct skill‑building and remedial training sessions for direct‑care staff.
• Demonstrate and coach self‑protection, physical restraint, and emergency response techniques.
• Collaborate with supervisors, facility directors, and the Instructional Design and Development Unit to tailor curricula to program needs.
• Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and coordinate classroom logistics.
• Maintain training records, schedule training spaces, and oversee co‑trainers and participants.
• Supervise Bureau of Training and Development staff as required.

Required profile

• At least six years of direct‑care experience with youth ages 10‑21 in residential or juvenile justice settings.
• Minimum one year of experience designing or delivering classroom training for direct‑care staff.
• Eligibility for NY HELPS (permanent competitive or 55b/c service) and a valid driver’s license.
• Willingness to travel up to 50 % of the time.
• Associate degree (or higher) may substitute for experience as outlined.
