Telephone Triage Nurse – Cancer Center (No Weekends/Holidays)

About the role

The Telephone Triage Nurse provides specialized clinical guidance to patients calling the Cancer Center’s dedicated line. The role focuses on assessing symptoms, offering home treatment advice, and coordinating care with the oncology team during a 7 am‑7 pm schedule, with no weekend or holiday work.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary point of contact for cancer patients calling with health questions.
• Collect subjective data, assess symptom severity, and assign acuity using established protocols.
• Provide home treatment advice, document encounters in the EMR, and ensure patients understand the information.
• Maintain therapeutic rapport, apply H.E.A.R.T. principles, and coordinate follow‑up with the oncology team.

Required profile

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Diploma, ADN, BSN) with current RN licensure.
• Multi‑State RN Compact license required for new hires.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Three or more years of RN experience in med/surg, primary care, ED, critical care, or case management.
• Cancer‑specific certification or qualifying education if providing chemotherapy‑related care.

Required skills

• Proficiency with an EMR system, preferably EPIC.
• Strong computer skills, including MS Word and Windows applications.
• Accurate keyboard and data entry abilities.
• Ability to navigate EMR, document clinical decisions, and retrieve patient information efficiently.
