Tax Associate – Houma, LA

About the role

Mauldin & Jenkins, LLC is looking for a Tax Associate to join its Houma office. The role offers a blend of field and office work on audit, management services, and tax return preparation for a diverse client base.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in evaluating and testing internal accounting controls.
• Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Review client bank and subsidiary reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
• Schedule and document accruals, write‑offs of prepaid expenses and deferred charges.
• Prepare a variety of tax returns, including S‑Corp, C‑Corp, partnership, multi‑state, individual, trust and estate.
• Stay current with federal and state tax laws and provide tax planning, consulting, and compliance services.
• Interact directly with clients and executives to minimize tax liabilities while adhering to regulations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree with a major or concentration in accounting.
• Working toward CPA exam completion is preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Professional appearance and conduct.
• Willingness to travel overnight and work occasional weekends.

Required skills

• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
• Understanding of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS).
• Working knowledge of federal and state income tax laws.
• Experience with tax return preparation.
• Proficiency with firm manuals and standard accounting software.
