Surgical Assistant II – Full-Time

About the role

The University of Miami is seeking a full‑time Surgical Assistant II to support operative teams in a variety of procedures. The role focuses on patient positioning, exposure, hemostasis, and wound closure while ensuring safety and comfort throughout the surgery.

Key responsibilities

• Position patients according to surgeon instructions, padding pressure points and maintaining circulation.
• Assist with visualization by placing retractors, packing sponges, and managing suction/irrigation.
• Control bleeding through clamping, cauterizing, applying hemostatic clips, and using local agents.
• Apply tourniquets, vessel loops, and non‑crushing clamps as required.
• Participate in volume replacement or auto‑transfusion techniques when indicated.
• Close surgical sites using running or interrupted sutures, subcuticular techniques, staples, or skin adhesives per surgeon directive.
• Perform postoperative skin assessments and report any positioning‑related injuries.

Required profile

• Familiarity with operating‑room equipment and patient‑safety protocols.
• Ability to follow precise surgeon instructions and maintain a sterile environment.
• Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.

Required skills

• Use of fracture tables, head and body stabilizers, and C‑arm extensions.
• Placement and padding of retractors.
• Suctioning, irrigating, and sponge packing.
• Clamping, cauterizing, and applying hemostatic clips.
• Tourniquet application and management.
• Vessel loop and non‑crushing clamp usage.
• Digital pressure techniques.
• Volume replacement and auto‑transfusion procedures.
• Running and interrupted suturing, subcuticular closure, and skin stapling.
• Local anesthetic injection for postoperative pain control.
