Supervisory Registrar – Collections Management

About the role

The Supervisory Registrar will lead the museum’s collection inventory control functions, overseeing transaction management, registrarial programs, and collection auditing. This position supervises a team and serves as a key source of policy guidance on national and international regulations affecting collections.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise staff to achieve unit objectives and maintain high-quality collection services.
  • Develop, implement, and review transaction management and inventory control policies for all collections.
  • Provide authoritative information on museum policies, treaties, and conventions governing collections.
  • Prepare museum-wide reports on collection growth, activity, and donations.
  • Represent the museum at relevant Smithsonian professional meetings and maintain active involvement in professional organizations.

Required profile

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑11 level in Federal Service, documenting collections, loans, acquisitions, and disposals across biological, geological, and cultural disciplines.
  • Experience leading multi‑month projects and working with universities, government agencies, NGOs, tribal organizations, and schools.
  • Career or career‑conditional status (or eligibility) and, for males born after 12/31/59, registration with Selective Service.
  • Ability to meet qualification requirements within 30 days of the announcement closing date.
