State Tax Director

About the role

SOLV Energy is seeking a State Tax Director to lead its state and local tax compliance, planning, and controversy functions across a growing portfolio of renewable energy projects. The role can be performed fully remote or in a hybrid model with periodic office visits in San Diego, CA or Edison, NJ.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee preparation, review, and filing of all state and local income/franchise tax returns.
• Manage co‑sourced arrangements for state composite and withholding filings for non‑resident partners.
• Develop and apply apportionment, nexus, and sourcing methodologies across multiple entities.
• Provide technical advice on tax implications of project structuring, acquisitions, and reorganizations.
• Lead state audits, assessments, and appeals, negotiating favorable outcomes.
• Ensure ASC 740 and ASC 450 reporting compliance and prepare documentation for uncertain tax positions.
• Design, recognize, and manage SOX‑related issues for state income and indirect tax matters.
• Direct compliance for sales, use, property, and excise taxes; maintain taxability matrices for EPC materials.
• Partner with procurement and project teams to apply exemptions and manage tax documentation.
• Identify and implement state tax planning opportunities aligned with SOLV’s renewable strategy.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in state and local tax compliance, planning, and controversy for partnerships and corporations.
• Strong knowledge of ASC 740, ASC 450, and FIN 48 (formerly FIN 48) analyses.
• Proven ability to lead state tax audits, assessments, and appeals.
• Experience with SOX compliance as it relates to tax matters.
• Familiarity with indirect tax compliance (sales, use, property, excise) and taxability matrices in the energy sector.
