Staff Systems Mainframe Engineer (Remote)

About the role

The Staff Systems Mainframe Engineer leads a team of engineers designing, building and supporting The Home Depot's hardware and system software infrastructure. As a senior z/OS mainframe engineer, the role ensures the reliability, performance and security of the enterprise mainframe environment and fills gaps left by recent retirements, removing single-person dependencies across Parallel Sysplex, scheduling, automation, networking, security and diagnostics. It is fully remote.

Key responsibilities

• Lead configuration, debugging and support of IT solutions, and field and corporate rollouts of technology
• Set up system software, hardware and equipment, create specifications and manage purchase requests
• Build test suites so infrastructure-as-code can be deployed rapidly to production
• Research business trends and recommend strategic technology, including cloud, AI and security architectures
• Maintain infrastructure-as-code and AI models, and develop formal training courses
• Enable product and project teams, support architecture reviews and act as vendor liaison
• Drive root cause analysis, debugging and post-mortems for security incidents and outages
• Mentor junior Systems Engineers and convert knowledge-base articles into AI models

Required profile

• Age 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field
• 8+ years supporting production enterprise z/OS mainframe infrastructure preferred
• Experience installing, configuring, tuning and maintaining z/OS and ISV products, and cross-training peers
