Staff Software Engineer – Matching & Recommendations

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Matching and Recommendations team you will shape intelligent systems that improve safety, personalization, and overall user experience across our platform.

Key responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for Bumble’s recommendations platform, balancing relevance, marketplace health, reliability, and latency.
• Lead the design of large‑scale distributed systems that serve recommendations across multiple teams and domains.
• Identify and solve high‑leverage technical problems across the recommendations stack, providing clarity on ambiguous architectural decisions.
• Raise engineering quality by establishing architectural principles, observability practices, and operational excellence.
• Mentor senior engineers, influence technical direction across teams, and contribute high‑quality code to critical components.

Required profile

• 8+ years building large‑scale backend or distributed systems and delivering complex, multi‑team initiatives.
• Deep expertise in designing and operating high‑scale distributed systems using modern languages such as Go, Kotlin, or Java.
• Strong understanding of recommendation systems, ranking architectures, retrieval, candidate generation, feature serving, experimentation, and feedback loops.
• Experience building cloud‑native systems on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with a focus on scalability, resilience, and observability.
• Proven ability to define technical strategy and influence architectural direction across multiple engineering teams.
