Staff Physician (O-5) – Non‑Supervisory

About the role

As a Staff Physician (O‑5) you will deliver mission‑focused primary and urgent care to individuals in federal custody, working within a collaborative federal healthcare system. The position is open only to U.S. Public Health Service officers and Call to Active Duty candidates and may include additional assignment pay and loan repayment benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Provide ambulatory and infirmary‑based medical care to a diverse international patient population, including adults, children, and families.
• Collect comprehensive medical and social histories, conduct initial and follow‑up assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe appropriate treatments.
• Refer complex cases to specialist consultants or local hospitals and coordinate hospital admissions.
• Deliver emergency medical, surgical, and mental‑health services as needed.
• Review and co‑sign medical documentation, serve as a consultant for advanced practice providers, and oversee their scope of practice.
• Utilize communication assistance resources to support patients with limited English proficiency or communication disabilities.

Required profile

• Licensed physician eligible for USPHS officer status (O‑5 rank).
• Experience providing primary, urgent, and emergency care in a correctional or federal setting.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and specialist consultants.
