Staff Electrode Process Engineer - Anode & Cathode Pilot Line

About the role

Amprius Technologies, a lithium-ion battery manufacturer headquartered in Fremont, California, is hiring a Staff Electrode Process Engineer to own the electrode manufacturing process on its anode and cathode pilot line. The engineer owns the four core processes of slurry mixing, coating, calendering and slitting, ensuring the line delivers in-spec, defect-free electrodes to the cell-assembly line on schedule and at target yield. The role reports to the Pilot Line Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Own process parameters for slurry mixing, coating, calendering and slitting, defining and qualifying process windows and releasing them as specifications, recipes and SOPs.
• Own first-pass yield and scrap, tracking yield by step and defect type, building Pareto charts of defects and leading root-cause investigations (8D, 5-Why, fishbone).
• Implement and manage SPC on critical parameters and in-line metrology, and set up data collection so yield and process capability are visible by step, product and shift.
• Run structured experiments (DOE) to optimize mixing, coating, calendering and slitting parameters against yield, throughput and electrode performance, with R&D and cell engineering.
• Ensure assembly-ready material: slit-roll quality, electrode drying and moisture control, roll handling and identification, and timely handoff to the cell-assembly line.
• Lead new equipment and new-line implementation, including FAT/SAT, test and qualification builds, and new product and recipe transfer from R&D to production.
• Lead PFMEAs, control plans and change control, and qualify changes with capability studies (Cpk, Gage R&R).
• Write and maintain SOPs and work instructions, train and mentor technicians and operators, and support daily production troubleshooting.

Required profile

• BS or higher in Chemical, Materials or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent engineering experience.
• 5+ years of process engineering experience in lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing or a closely related roll-to-roll coating process, with hands-on ownership of production processes.
• Demonstrated first-pass yield or defect-rate improvements owned end to end.
• Ability to read electrode design specifications and equipment technical drawings.
• On-site in Fremont, primarily on the production floor, with occasional off-shift or weekend support.

Required skills

• Hands-on experience with slurry mixing, slot-die or comma-bar coating with drying ovens, roll-press calendering and slitting equipment.
• Proficiency with SPC, DOE and statistical analysis (JMP, Minitab or equivalent), PFMEA and Gage R&R.
• Preferred: experience with silicon-based anodes, water-based and NMP-based slurries, MES and tool-data analysis (Python, SQL), and Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
