Job description

About the role

AOSense develops and manufactures quantum technologies using atom optics, measuring accelerations, rotations, magnetic fields and time with high accuracy. It is looking for a hands-on R&D engineer who specializes in compact, robust mechanical and optical design, assembly and testing, working with physicists and engineers to build and test accelerometers, gyroscopes, gravimeters, atomic clocks, frequency standards and magnetometers.

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with physicists and engineers to rapidly iterate designs and prototypes
  • Create, assemble and test complex sensor and clock hardware with electrical, mechanical and optical engineers
  • Procure mechanical and optical components and coordinate their fabrication and assembly
  • Assemble and test vacuum systems
  • Align lasers through single-mode optical fibers and through bulk electro-optic and acousto-optic devices
  • Define, document and implement PCB test plans with electrical engineers, and build and test prototype circuits and test fixtures
  • Procure and maintain mechanical and optical test equipment, and report validation test results

Required profile

  • Bachelor's degree in physics or engineering, or equivalent professional experience, with R&D experience
  • Demonstrated success building complex optomechanical prototypes and products
  • Willingness to become an expert in new fabrication disciplines
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, able to thrive in a dynamic environment
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency required for U.S. government contracts

Required skills

  • Mechanical prototyping, vacuum system design, assembly and testing, and micro-optics alignment
  • Optical testing (polarization, wavefront flatness, reflectivity, phase shifts, aberrations) and laser frequency stabilization
  • Electrical prototyping: PCB fabrication, assembly, soldering and rework; low-noise analog, mixed-signal and RF electronics
  • Data acquisition and simulation tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Visual Basic, Python and C/C++
  • Design software such as SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, Zemax and FRED; OrCAD/Altium schematics and PCB layout
  • Flight-qualified hardware development and optical test equipment

What we offer
